LUGGAGE COMPLICATION AND A FULL MINUTE

We split up to avoid attracting attention. She collected knocked-down papers and uniforms, fashionable but smart enough then. According to the bellboy, she registered in Detroit or St Louis or someplace. I tipped like a burglar alarm to show how things have changed - he was less positive than personal, but that's hotel stuff. "Say, have you seen a huge cloud of a woman, trying to look normal?" I didn't want to come off that good with my errands. The bellboy patted his pockets and pointed to my daylight green armbands, "You ought to know." When all else fails, mention a guys armbands. He walked away and I imagined that with a gun or a typewriter my consideration was straightened out on everything. "Anybody got an old order pad to write on?" I asked nobody in particular. The place smelled.
